Arts for Life NJ offers high-quality arts classes for active adults 50 and older. Beginning October 8 and running through December 3, Arts for Life will be offering “The Actor’s Craft,” an acting class for beginner and intermediate actors. The class is taught by Michael Bias, founder and Artistic Director of The Garage Theatre Group, a Bergen County institution for nearly 30 years.
Students learn the foundation of the actor’s craft with a range of exercises developed by legendary acting teachers Lee Strasberg and Sanford Meisner. They develop their senses and imagination by practicing monologues and acting in scenes with classmates.
“If you’re worried about memorization, DON’T”, says Michael Bias. “The class is structured to the individual. Some students are there to work on monologues and scenes, others are there for the exploration. I’ve been teaching this class for five years and I’m thrilled with the results that I’ve observed. Non–actors becoming actors. Students who said, “I can’t memorize”, doing full scenes.”
As the class progresses, relaxation and sensory exercises are introduced that open the students’ imagination. Participants learn how to build believable characters by taking risks and making choices.
Classes are held Tuesday nights 7:00 – 9:00pm at Flat Rock Brook Nature Center, 443 Van Nostrand Ave. in Englewood. Eight weeks are only $160, or new students can take an introductory class for $25 and have that applied to the total when they continue.
